Welcome to Courtside Coaching PE

Online Physical Education for Homeschool Families

Ryan Rucker, founder of Courtside Coaching.

Growing up, I loved PE. I was one of those kids who you’d ask, “What’s your favorite subject?” and I’d absolutely say PE.

I was fast, athletic, and could usually pick up any sport I tried (okay, probably not equestrian or bobsledding or… okay, I take back my previous statement).

Anyway, sports were my thing, just like Science was other kids’ things and Math was definitely other kids' things. Growing up, I thought everyone had their corner of the school, and mine was PE.

It’s been a billion years since I graduated High School, and over these billion years, I’ve noticed some things.

  1. Who you were in school doesn’t define who you are as an adult.

  2. While habits can be broken, they do matter.

(I’ve learned a lot more things, but for the sake of this article, I’ll stop there.)

I talk to so many parents who kind of scoff at their own athletic background. People who say, “Oh, I’ve never been athletic,” or “PE has never been my thing.”

Think about your average PE coach or experience in PE class, and it completely makes sense. Most of us grew up sitting in lines, doing jumping jacks, push-ups, and getting haphazard instructions on how to play games before getting pelted by a dodgeball, before having to change back into your school clothes to get back to the actual learning.

But there’s so much to learn in PE!

Physical movement is freedom. The ability to move your body is a privilege. Getting from point A to point B without aches and pains or simply losing your breath is a cheat code to a happier life, but unfortunately so many of us are scared away from physical activity because it’s associated with embarrassing moments from our childhood where you were either first or last.

Our kids deserve to move their bodies to the best of their abilities in a way that sets them up for life.

Now, I mentioned that while habits can be broken, they do matter, and it’s true. I know marathon runners who didn’t do a single sport growing up. That’s awesome, but it’s not the norm. The World Health Organization states that 80% of adolescents do not meet the recommended levels of physical activity. That’s not great. Many adults struggle with their health. I don’t think I need a stat to prove that. And while some people go overboard in unhealthy ways, trying to get back into shape, I understand why, because people who are insufficiently active have a 20% to 30% increased risk of death compared to people who are sufficiently active.

Physical education matters.

Life is going to put a number of hurdles in our kids’ way. As an educator, I want to give every kid the best opportunity to overcome them confidently.

Courtside Coaching PE is built to help give your kids basic activities to complete, teaching them that movement can be fun (and even easy). Movement helps clear our minds and physically feel better. Fitness isn’t a threat. Running isn’t a punishment.

When we stack days, completing 20 minutes of physical activity each day, we are more productive, healthy, and capable of achieving things greater than we ever imagined! Science is important. Math is important. English is important, and so is Physical Education!

So, yes, Courtside Coaching PE is here to help your family meet all state requirements when it comes to saying “I got it done.” But more than that, Courtside Coaching PE is here to help your family enjoy their fitness journey by bringing community and movement together, no matter where you are.

If you’re considering signing up for one of our plans, I hope you give it a shot. Of course, as the creator of Courtside Coaching PE, I’m going to say that, but that’s why I tie everything back to our traditional broken views of Physical Education. Kids deserve better than what many of us had growing up.

I’m a real person, with real experiences and a genuine passion to meet your kids where they’re at and encourage them to be the healthiest version of themselves.

If you ever have questions, I’m right here, ready to answer them to help your family enjoy Physical Education.
