About Courtside Coaching…
Years ago, I heard comedian Hasan Minhaj refer to fatherhood as having “Spike Lee tickets” to your kid’s life. As an avid hoops fan and dad, this resonated with me.
Spike Lee famously sits courtside for almost every New York Knicks game, consistently enjoying the best seats in the house. He’s there, he’s present, and while he may sometimes feel involved in the game, ultimately, it’s the player’s game to be played, and Spike gets to see it all unfold.
“Courtside” isn’t simply a play on sports. Sure, there’s a sports element, but it’s about being there for the moments you wouldn’t trade for the world. That’s what I want for myself; it’s what I want for my kids: to be present, mindful, and fully aware of the game in front of us so that it’s easier to block out the noise. That’s what I want for you.
I’m Ryan Rucker, founder of Courtside Coaching, host of Courtside Forever, creator of Be Ice Cream Or Be Nothing, and author of the best-selling children’s book, Is This Your Favorite Ice Cream? I’m a husband, dad, coach, and somehow everything you just read goes together.
I’ve coached Track & Field for seven years and Basketball for four. My work in athletics, as an athlete and coach, led to my being named to the Will C. Wood High School Hall of Fame in 2025. Additionally, I was named the City of Vacaville’s most outstanding coach of 2024 for my work with young athletes in the city's basketball program.
After looking at what I loved most, I decided to study to obtain my Personal Trainer’s license to work with kids and parents on their fitness and athletic goals. I love watching things click on the court for my young athletes, especially my daughters. Sports should be fun, and so should training. Of course, challenges come with the territory, but everything we do comes with a clear purpose.
Courtside Coaching is built around kids. But the coaching doesn't stop there. I work with adults at a local gym too — free weights, proper technique, the kind of training that actually teaches you how to move well. Form matters. It always has. Whether we're in the gym or outside with minimal equipment, I coach adults the same way I coach my athletes. Show up. Be accountable. Bring your best. That part doesn't change regardless of age.
I know what it’s like to stand at the bottom of a mountain, looking up, wondering how in the world you’re going to reach the top. Whether you want your kids to form a healthier relationship with sports, whether you want to take your dogs on a two-mile walk without feeling winded afterward, or whether you’ve been cooped up with the kids for what feels like years and you want to feel confident as a parent again, I’ve got you.
At Courtside Coaching, I am zeroed in on getting back to basics, not overcomplicating workouts, performance, or life. If that resonates with you in any way, let’s connect.
Thanks for being here. See you soon.
-Ryan
P.S. You may be wondering how an ice cream maker became a Personal Trainer. Did I give up ice cream? Did I start making healthier ice cream? No, and no. Life is too short to eat bad ice cream. Like everything, moderation is key, but yes, I still make it, and I still love it.
